    Benefits of Glycerin Soap

What benefits can Glycerin offer to our Skin?

Glycerin is a humectant, which means that it has the effect of attracting moisture from the air. It bonds with the water molecules from various environmental sources and holds them in the skin’s surface, leaving it plump and hydrated. Humectants can be great in humid environments, where they can easily pull moisture from the air into the skin.

However, glycerin can also attract moisture from deeper within the skin. If you live in an arid climate, you may want to steer clear of this type of product as it will pull the moisture from the deep layers of the skin to the surface where the moisture will evaporate. This could also happen in other climates during the winter months, when there is low humidity.

When to choose a Glycerin Soap over a Moisturizing Soap

In simple terms, humectants (glycerin) bind water to the skin, whereas moisturizers create a protective barrier that locks in hydration and prevents water loss.

When choosing a soap, it’s essential to determine if your skin is dry or dehydrated. Dehydrated skin will lack water due to diet or temporary environmental factors. It will feel tight and have a dull appearance. Dry skin is a result of less sebum production. The skin does not have enough fatty lipids to retain its protective barrier. It will appear flaky and patchy and often has redness.

Humectants are especially useful for oily or acne-prone skin. They are also great to plump up sagging skin or fine lines and give a boost of hydration. As mentioned before, hydrating products should be used with caution during winter months or if living in arid climates.

Moisturizing soaps are great for all skin types as they help rebuild skin barrier function and prevent dry skin. If the skin is already oily, a moisturizing soap may wind up clogging pores. In this case, you may want to use a humectant soap and then seal the skin with an appropriate moisturizer for your skin type.

    the Evolution Begins

in2ition mercantile was the first of its kind – a boutique of unique products curated by an architect with a passion to tread lightly on the earth. A space that proved adaptive reuse is real and upcycling can be awesome.

We are happy to be such an influence on so many other businesses that have taken our lead in supporting local manufacturers, American-made, talented artists and world-changing cooperatives. They say copying is the best form of flattery and in this case it will benefit so many people, which is our wish from the beginning.

It was with great selflessness that we sought to help small brands and artisans by offering a location to bring their product to the masses. Many of these brands have now become known all over Long Island as well as branching out across the country. We are happy to have contributed to their success.

Amazing opportunities have presented themselves that will be leading us into new innovations and creations. We are excited to embark on these ventures although it is bittersweet to leave our sustainable hand built space.

in2ition mercantile is evolving yet will still be available to all.

  • Soap Saving 101

    Soap Saving 101

Nothings lasts forever but there are ways of prolonging the life of your soap.
When you leave your soap under a stream of water in the shower, this will cause those suds to continue to wash down the drain. Before you know it, you are left with half the bar you started with! We don’t want that to happen, especially if the soap is a specialty bar from in2ition mercantile.
So let’s save our soap! After each shower, it is best to allow your soap to dry out.
A few ways you can do this is a dish or pad that allows the water to drain. We have bamboo soap dishes with drainage holes to match your decor. We suggest placing the soap on its side to increase air flow.

Or choose the soap lift, made with recycled bioplastic that allows water to drain and air to flow beneath bar soaps. This unique design prevents soap from absorbing excess water.

Behold the Power of the Mushroom

What do mushrooms have to do with Architecture?
    mushroom

Toadstool mushrooms are a beautiful form of shelter for small creatures, with a singular column that supports a massive cantilevered cap, it is quite an impressive structure!

But this fungi is so much more…designers have been harnessing their potential to address sustainable challenges for years…

Fungi has been used to filter bacteria in contaminated water, for biological remediation to improve soil in agricultural industries, and as textile dyes…

A few years ago, designer Danielle Trofe disrupted the lighting industry with her beautiful MushLume lamps…using mushroom mycelium material originally created by Evocative Design, a biomaterials company that is truly changing the world for the better!

This innovative material uses agricultural waste in combo with mycelium to create an organic and compostable plastic that can be used as packaging, textiles, in automotive, surfboards and insulation.

“The olive tree is surely the richest gift of heaven.”

Olive oils are unique and distinct, each brand of olive oil having its own character, as determined by many factors, like those unique flavor differences found in fine wines. All are similar, however, with the health benefits they bring. Olive oil consumption is said to lower blood pressure, prevent dandruff, prevent wrinkles, prevent dry skin and acne, strengthen nails and even stop muscle aching.

We are fortunate to have an exclusive supply of Extra Virgin Olive Oil from a small family in Sicily. The Diliberto Family prides itself in growing the finest olive trees naturally and with decades of experience, harvest their olives at just the right moment. They capture the fresh aroma and light nutty taste with the First Cold Press. It’s like eating an olive right off the tree.

  • So what is Melaleuca alternifolia?

    So what is Melaleuca alternifolia?

Commonly known as Tea Tree Oil, Melaleuca alternifolia is an essential oil that is derived from the leaves of the Tea Tree.
*Note that the tea plant used to make black and green teas is unrelated to the tea tree.

The chemical constituents in Tea Tree essential oil can help discourage the growth of fungus. It works great with other antifungal oils to fight athlete’s foot, treat acne, soothe sunburn and insect bites.  Add up to 6 drops to 1 oz. of lotion or carrier oil.

Tea Tree is also known to fight germs and bacteria. Therefore, it is commonly used in natural toothpastes and homemade kitchen cleansers.
For a super clean toilet, add 5 drops of Tea Tree and 5 drops of Lemon essential oils to 1 cup of vinegar, 1/4 cup of baking soda, 1/4 cup of borax – pour into the toilet and scrub.

With the Spring here and Summer on its way, Tea Tree is a great essential oil to have in your holistic arsenal at home. Stop in and see all the essential oils we have in stock right now!

  • SCENTsations

    SCENTsations

    Your Unique Style…

…may begin with a fragrance that resonates with your feelings.
Some of these scents bring out the tiger in us while others may help ease our stress or make us feel euphoric. In all cases, they touch on our emotions.
Our nose (olfactory membrane) sends a message directly to the limbic regions of our brains. The limbic system is the seat of emotions, instinctive behaviors and connections to learning and memory…
Where do these intoxicating aromas come from?
Traditional perfumes and colognes originated by distilling the aromatic cells in certain plants known as plant essences. After distillation, the aromatic substances were referred to as an essential oil.
Many commercial perfumes use chemically derived ingredients that look to mimic the properties of essential oils. However, these copies do not have the same effect a true essential oil blend can have on the body and mind.
Essential oils are indeed the liquid gems of the Earth!

  • HEMP RULES!

    HEMP RULES!

A few weeks ago we had a photo shoot with some of our wonderful friends and colleagues. Here, Karen is showcasing our Cameo Dress, which is 55% hemp.

    Did you know?
Hemp threads are made from the long strands of the bast fiber in the stalk of the hemp plant. An extremely fast growing crop with minimal growth requirements, hemp can produce 250% more fiber than cotton and 600% more fiber than flax using the same amount of land! Here are some other pros of hemp:

    • Strong, durable & anti-microbial
    • Resistant to mold & ultraviolet light
    • Biodegradable
    • Uses less water than any other fiber
    • No need for pesticides
    • Helps prevent erosion

Stop in and feel the amazingly soft hemp fabrics for men and women!
